Marin Rod & Gun Club — 26th Annual “Kids Day On The Pier”

August 9, 2014 saw the 26th Annual “Kid’s Day on the Pier” at the Marin Rod & Gun Club in San Rafael, California. Co-sponsored this year by UPSAC (United Pier and Shore Anglers of California) and the IGFA (International Game Fish Association), an enthusiastic group of 70 youngsters, and a crowd of over 200 people, saw good weather and a variety of fish.

Loaner rods and reels were available as well as free bait and assistance when needed. Combined with the fishing was a free hot dog lunch and every participant received a rod and reel from the club. Fish that were caught included leopard sharks, bat rays, jacksmelt, and a rubberlip seaperch.

The Fish and Wildlife Department was well represented by Mary Patyten who passed out the department’s “Fishing Passport” booklets

Following the fishing was a wonderful hot dog lunch provided by the Marin Rod & Gun Club. Immediately after the lunch was the raffle where EVER youngster received a rod and reel.

The final event was the announcement of the age group winners, Each individual age group winner received 1st Place trophies for their catch, a beautiful IGFA certificate, and a copy of Pier Fishing in California by Ken Jones.

Age group winners: 6-year old and under: Ryan Etter; 7-year old: Sophia Bezakova; 8-year old: Justin Etter; 9-year old: Marcello Diazza; 10-year old: Andrew Etter; 11-year old: Jesse Morgan; 12-year old: Aidan Sugrve; 13-year-old: Dylan Hatch; 14-year-old: Keith Deemer; 15-year old: Zack Osborne.

In addition, there were two special awards: Largest fish: Jake Barnes (27 ½-inch leopard shark). Most fish caught: Andrew Etter.

An estimated 20 other members carried out a variety of jobs.

Representing the California Department of Fish and Wildlife was Mary Peyton who manned a booth and signed up kids for the California Fishing Passport Program.
