whenever i catch a bat ray, i keep it on its belly and i put my foot on the tip of the tail with enough force to keep it from moving the tail at all. then i remove the hook and the stinger and throw it back.

There is no size or bag limit on bat rays.

Where does it officially say size / bag limits for rays?
I’ve looked on DFG & couldnt find it

* I think toxins are stored in the larger animals
especially in the liver.
Shame cause I’d like to try eating the
Liver / heart / kidneys of rays

I don’t know the answer to that. The venom may be stronger but the size of the stinger is far smaller and probably doesn’t do as much damage. In either case it’s not something that you want.

Usually, baby venomous things have stronger, more concentrated venom than their adult counterparts. I at least know that it’s the case with snakes. My uncle was one of the people who worked with snakes at a zoo ( don’t remember the big Latin word for his job…) He taught all of us nieces and nephews, everything we didn’t want to know about snakes. So, from that I would reason that strings from baby rays are probably more painful than those from adults.

Agreed, you’ve got to be careful when handling bat rays (and the smaller round stingrays). It’s best to remove the hook with the fish upside down with its tail (and stinger) under the fish.

I have caught hundreds of Sting Rays over the years off the Piers, I always release them intact.I have only caught one Bat Ray, a small one the Wing Span couldn’t have been more than 18 inches across Well go figure that was the only time I got stung for being careless ,I was showing a kid at the Pier who was curious I flipped over on it’s back it’s tail brushed against my wrist. I threw it back inta and alive .Within less than a couple of minutes I felt an excruciating pain in my hand, then it started going up my arm,it felt like I was being stabbed by Hot Knives.This pain lasted for nearly an hour, by then the pain subsided and my whole arm up to my shoulder was numb for at least a couple if hours.It taught me a lesson to be more careful with these creatures.Trust me fellow Fishermen you do not want to feel the Sting of a Bat Ray.!!!!
