Joe, Two lines are allowed with an unlimited amount of hooks. I usually use a hi/low set up with two hooks but if you were using a bait rig such as a Sabiki they usually have six hooks. As for the artificial lure, yes treble hooks are allowed. Ken

Hi again my question is when fishing from a pier I’m allowed 2 lines. But how many hooks on each line. When using lures can they have treble hooks on them. Thanks again

Unfortunately the fishing is a little slow currently due, I assume, to the recent weather that’s seen both cold temperatures and rain. But, it can change almost day to day.

As for tackle, keep it simple. If you’re not seeking out the sharks and rays all you need is fairly light tackle since you primarily will be seeking out perch and croakers (on the bottom) and mackerel (on the top). The rod should be heavy enough to cast a 1-2 ounce sinker; use 8-12 pound test line and hooks size 6-2. As for bait, it’s hard to beat live bait—sea worms, ghost shrimp and fresh mussels.

There’s a good bait and tackle shop in Dana Point, just a few miles away from San Clemente, and I would recommend giving it a visit both for bait and information:

Hogan's Bait And Tackle — 34320 Pacific Coast Hwy, Dana Point, CA —
(949) 493-3528 — ask for Stephanie, Hector, Mike or Ivan. All are knowledgeable and will give you good guidance.

BTW, here’s an additional article you might find interesting:

Good luck on your trip, Ken

I’ll be traveling to the pier from Florida next week what kind for rod setup do you suggest and what kind of additional tackle should I bring not looking for any sharks or rays (have plenty in florida) just some mid pier smaller croker type stuff. Do I need a hoop net to bring the fish up to the pier and to release them safely what weight sinkers and size hooks do you suggest

Hey, thanks for the positive outlook on fishing here. I'm a newbie and the 4-5 times I've been out here mid Pier I haven't got a single thing, or gotten a single bite. But, based on your enthusiasm I'm going to keep trying!
